Seven months after its highly anticipated opening, the Savusavu market is experiencing a surge in vendor interest that has raised concerns regarding overcrowding. Local authorities are now actively seeking solutions to manage the increasing demand.

Local Government Minister Maciu Nalumisa expressed his astonishment at the rapid increase in the need for vendor spaces. The market was initially designed to cater to the current number of vendors while allowing for a moderate influx of newcomers. However, the growth in vendors has far exceeded expectations.

In response to this challenge, the ministry is contemplating the creation of satellite markets in Savusavu and its surrounding areas. “If necessary, we may have to create satellite markets so that people don’t all have to come into town. We can set them up in locations that are more accessible to the public,” stated Mr. Nalumisa.

Additionally, the ministry is evaluating the impact of “casual” vendors—those who travel from nearby villages or farming communities to sell their goods primarily on weekends—further contributing to the market’s crowded conditions. The objective is to ensure that all vendors have a fair chance to thrive while maintaining a safe and accessible environment for customers.

This proactive stance reflects a commitment to harmonize community livelihoods with the health of the market environment, fostering a vibrant economic landscape that benefits vendors, customers, and the local community alike.
