Healthcare professionals at Savusavu Hospital on Vanua Levu are experiencing immense pressure as they navigate issues of congestion, inadequate space, and aging infrastructure while striving to provide essential services for the Cakaudrove community. During a recent visit, Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa was made aware of these challenges firsthand by hospital staff.
Ravunawa highlighted the ongoing concerns about excessive workloads, congestion, and the limitations of physical workspace, all exacerbated by working conditions that do not meet modern standards. He confirmed that the Ministry of Health is taking swift actions, including deploying additional staff temporarily to alleviate the pressure on existing personnel.
The Assistant Minister noted that immediate needs regarding infrastructure and equipment would be communicated to the ministry’s central planning and capital works teams for prioritized action. He emphasized the growing congestion in critical areas of the hospital, particularly the emergency department and surgical outpatient department, among others, which are currently operating beyond capacity.
Another pressing issue includes roof leakages in several parts of the hospital, which Ravunawa stated would be addressed through upcoming minor works, particularly with the onset of the rainy season. Meanwhile, the maternity and general wards also require attention and resources.
However, he explained that plans for significant renovations and expansions are temporarily on hold due to recent landslide damage in parts of the hospital grounds. Despite these hurdles, the Ministry remains committed to improving healthcare infrastructure and maintaining quality services for the people reliant on Savusavu Hospital. The concerted efforts underline a hopeful pursuit of better healthcare delivery in the region.
