Healthcare professionals at Savusavu Hospital on Vanua Levu are facing significant challenges as they contend with issues such as overcrowding, inadequate facilities, and aging infrastructure while working to provide vital services to the Cakaudrove community. The urgency of these concerns was highlighted during a recent visit by Assistant Health Minister Penioni Ravunawa, who engaged with hospital staff to better understand their struggles.
Minister Ravunawa acknowledged the persistent challenges posed by heavy workloads, limited physical space, and outdated working conditions. In response, he confirmed that the Ministry of Health is implementing immediate measures, including the temporary deployment of additional staff, to help ease the burden on current personnel.
Ravunawa also assured that pressing infrastructure and equipment needs identified at the hospital would be communicated to the ministry’s central planning and capital works teams for prioritized attention. He specifically noted the increasing congestion in critical hospital areas, particularly the emergency department and surgical outpatient department, which are currently exceeding their operational capacities.
In addition to these issues, Ravunawa mentioned that roof leakages in various parts of the hospital would be addressed through upcoming minor works, especially important as the rainy season approaches. The maternity and general wards are also in need of resources and improvements.
However, plans for major renovations and expansions face delays due to recent landslide damage impacting parts of the hospital grounds. Despite these setbacks, the Ministry of Health remains dedicated to enhancing healthcare infrastructure and ensuring quality services for those who depend on Savusavu Hospital. The ongoing efforts reflect a hopeful commitment to improving healthcare delivery in the region, emphasizing the government’s resolve to support and uplift healthcare services in the community.
