In the city of Aurora, Illinois, a Mexican tradition is experiencing a delightful and surprising twist. The food truck Pariente Mix has revolutionized the traditional Rosca de Reyes by introducing a savory and unique version that has gone viral on social media.
From carne asada to al pastor and barbacoa, this innovative creation has intrigued hundreds of people eager to taste it as they celebrate the Día de Reyes with a modern flair. Early in the morning, the team at Pariente Mix tirelessly prepares these savory roscas that have captured the attention of the community.
The idea, according to owner Leo Ortega, stemmed from a conversation. “We wanted to create something different that people had never tried before, while still respecting the tradition. That’s how the meat-filled rosca was born,” Ortega explained.
Importantly, the figure of the Niño Dios remains inside the rosca, preserving the religious significance of the celebration. The arrival of the Magi symbolizes the crown of kings, while the hidden figurine represents baby Jesus, recalling the moment when Mary and Joseph hid him to protect him from King Herod.
The success of this innovative rosca hasn’t come easily. Preparing them requires dedication and teamwork within the limited space of a food truck. “We wake up very early to make them. Everything is fresh and handmade. We want each rosca to be special,” said Eric Bañuelos, an employee involved in the preparation.
As customers continue to line up, Ortega indicated that this is just the beginning. “We want to keep innovating without losing our roots. This rosca is a tribute to our culture,” he shared.
In a beautiful blend of tradition and creativity, Pariente Mix has discovered the formula to keep the Día de Reyes celebration alive. This initiative serves as a poignant reminder of faith, hope, and family unity, all wrapped up in a delicious rosca filled with carne asada, al pastor, or barbacoa.
This innovative twist on a beloved tradition illustrates the power of creativity in honoring cultural heritage while engaging the community. It’s a hopeful reminder that even in a modern world, there’s always room for tradition and family gatherings, each bite a testament to both culinary art and cultural legacy.
