The Housing Authority of Savannah (HAS) has announced that it will open its waiting list for the Section 8 Housing Choice Voucher (HCV) Program. This initiative is crucial for promoting affordable housing, which Executive Director Evette Hester emphasizes is vital for fostering thriving families and strong communities. Since stepping into her role in December, Hester has highlighted the agency’s commitment to expanding housing options and providing fair chances for all residents.

The Section 8 program offers rental assistance to eligible low-income individuals and families, enabling them to secure safe and affordable housing in the private market. In this system, qualifying households contribute a portion of their income toward rent, while the Housing Authority covers the remainder directly to landlords. Hester noted that reopening the waiting list signifies a significant step toward enhancing stability and opportunity for families throughout Savannah.

The HAS will accept applications for a limited period, beginning on Monday, July 7, 2025, at 8:30 a.m., and closing on Friday, July 11, 2025, at 4:00 p.m. The first 1,500 applicants will be selected based on their application submission time through the online portal at portals.savannahpha.com. To qualify, applicants must have an income that does not exceed 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI).

This development is a positive move toward addressing housing needs in the community and ensuring that more families have a chance at securing affordable living spaces. The transparent and accessible application process aims to encourage eligible residents to apply and take advantage of this opportunity.
