Savannah Guthrie has made a triumphant return to the Today show following successful vocal cord surgery. After announcing in December her need for the procedure, she revealed on January 23 that the results were “so good, I could cry.” Guthrie’s official return to the anchor desk took place on January 26.
In a video call to Today on January 20, while still on vocal rest, Guthrie shared her optimism, stating, “The good news is that it worked.” She explained how the issues that drove her to seek surgery, initially thought to be due to normal aging, had worsened to the point of making it difficult to complete sentences.
Her doctor diagnosed her with polyps and nodules on her vocal cords, which is a common concern for professional voice users. The medical team emphasized that Guthrie sought treatment at the ideal moment, and the specific procedure she underwent, known as microlaryngeal surgery, was essential for her recovery. Guthrie expressed eagerness to regain her normal voice, saying she was “so ready to get this over with.”
Following her surgery, Guthrie observed strict vocal rest for eight days, communicating by writing on a whiteboard. The moment she spoke again was significant; her first words, “Good morning, today is Tuesday, January 13, 2026,” clearly showcased the success of her operation. The joy in her voice was palpable as she noted how good it sounded, leaving her “speechless” once more.
Guthrie’s experience serves as an uplifting reminder of the resilience and dedication that come with overcoming personal health challenges. Her return not only marks a new chapter in her career but also inspires those facing similar struggles.
