Sarah Sherman, the Saturday Night Live (SNL) star known for her unique comedy style, is set to debut her first comedy special on HBO and HBO Max this December. Titled “Sarah Squirm: Live + In The Flesh,” the special reflects Sherman’s distinct comedic voice that she has cultivated over the years, especially under her “Sarah Squirm” persona. While the exact release date remains under wraps, the special promises to showcase Sherman’s dynamic humor, characterized by its rawness and unpredictability.

The special is being produced by notable figures, including Lorne Michaels, Sherman’s boss at SNL, through Broadway Video. It also involves contributions from Josh Safdie’s Central Pictures, Rotten Science, and Jack Bensinger, a collaborator of Sherman’s. Filmed at The Bell House in Brooklyn, the show is the culmination of two years of touring.

HBO describes the special as an exhilarating mix of outrageous confessions and soul-stirring humor. HBO’s Executive Vice President of Late Night & Specials, Nina Rosenstein, praised the special for its electrifying content, likening it to “plugging directly into a live wire.” Sherman humorously advises viewers not to watch while having a meal, hinting at the special’s intense and unfiltered nature.

This release adds to a growing trend of SNL cast members showcasing their stand-up projects on various streaming platforms. Marcello Hernández recently finished taping a Netflix special, Devon Walker has featured on Hulu, and James Austin Johnson is working on a new project. Additionally, the comedy trio Please Don’t Destroy has self-released a special on YouTube.

Currently, Sherman is back at SNL’s Studio 8H for the show’s 51st season, which debuts with host Bad Bunny and musical guest Doja Cat. Sherman’s return to SNL marks her fifth season, further cementing her place in the world of comedy with this anticipated HBO special.
