Sara Collins is set for a pivotal showdown at PFL Europe 4 on December 13th, where she will challenge Cris Cyborg for the PFL featherweight championship in the co-main event. This match marks the culmination of a long journey for Collins, who secured her position as the number one contender over a year ago. Reflecting on her path to this title fight, Collins expressed her anticipation and readiness, saying, “I asked for this fight a year ago… I’ve been preparing for a year. So, yeah. I’m excited that it’s finally happening.”
Looking forward, Collins had previously shared her aspirations for 2025, emphasizing her singular aim to capture a world title in mixed martial arts. Upon receiving the opportunity to achieve this goal, she noted the relief of it coming to fruition just in time, commenting, “I was a bit worried that it wasn’t going to happen this year, but it’s all worked out and it’s going to happen.”
Facing Cyborg, who is widely regarded as one of the greatest female fighters in the history of MMA, adds to the stakes of this bout. Collins acknowledged the significance of defeating such a formidable opponent, stating, “I mean, it’d be pretty cool… I’m more focused on just fighting Cris.” She recognizes that the title is a prestigious addition, but her primary motivation remains the challenge of overcoming Cyborg.
Reflecting on her journey, Collins recalled her early training days when her coaches instilled in her the goal of preparing to face Cyborg, a notion she initially dismissed. “I was like, haha, yeah, that’s never going to happen. But turns out here we are. And I did manifest this by accident. Yeah, I’m super excited.” The realization that a fight with Cyborg was possible became clearer to her after being matched up against Leah McCourt, which Collins viewed as a stepping stone to ultimately facing the champion.
Her performance in that bout, where she achieved a first-round submission victory over McCourt, significantly bolstered her confidence. “Yeah, for sure. I surprised myself. I think I surprised everyone else, but yeah, it’s definitely helped with my confidence,” Collins said.
Collins’ coach, the well-respected former UFC fighter ‘Judo’ Dan Kelly, has played a crucial role in her development as a mixed martial artist. Discussing his mentorship, Collins remarked on the importance of having experienced guidance in her quest to carve out her own legacy in the sport.
Overall, as Collins prepares for this monumental clash, she embodies the spirit of determination and hope that surrounds her long-anticipated title shot against a legendary fighter. The upcoming fight promises to be a thrilling encounter, not only for Collins but also for fans eager to witness the next chapter in women’s MMA.
