The Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf experienced a significant collapse on Monday around 12:44 p.m., as a portion of the structure fell into the ocean during a $4 million repair project aimed at fixing damage from previous winter storms. The incident involved approximately 150 feet of the wharf, which included critical facilities like the Dolphin Restaurant and restrooms.
At the time of the collapse, three individuals were present on the wharf. Two were rescued by emergency personnel, while the third was able to swim to safety. Fortunately, all three sustained only minor injuries. The wharf was immediately evacuated, and Monitoring teams, including city officials and engineers, were present on-site at the time of the incident, continually assessing the structure’s integrity. They believed that conditions were safe to proceed based on their forecasts. However, unexpected changes in weather led to the sudden collapse, highlighting the unpredictable nature of such situations.
The city has since closed the entire wharf and the Santa Cruz Harbor until further notice. Main Beach and Cowell’s Beach are also closed as a precaution.
