The incident occurred around 12:45 p.m. and was part of a series of weather-related challenges affecting the region, including road closures and coastal evacuations in Capitola.
The National Weather Service Bay Area alerted the public about the collapse, urging caution due to dangerous wave conditions. Fortunately, Santa Cruz Fire Department officials confirmed that, while two people required assistance from lifeguards, they did not sustain any injuries. A third individual managed to exit the surf independently. The area of the wharf that collapsed was already designated for maintenance and had been off-limits to the public since January.
Santa Cruz Mayor Fred Keeley provided insights into the incident, stating that the collapsed section included the Dolphin restaurant and a public restroom that had been previously compromised. Despite the extent of the damage, Keeley confirmed that all personnel working at the site were safe and accounted for.
The collapse poses significant navigational hazards due to debris in the water, leading to requests for people to avoid the area entirely for their safety. In light of an incoming storm, city personnel are currently assessing the structural integrity of the remaining wharf.

In a further toll from the weather, the Santa Cruz County reported a tragic loss at Sunset State Beach, where a large wave swept a man beneath debris, claiming his life. Another individual is currently unaccounted for after entering the water at Marina State Beach, underscoring the dangers posed by the high surf.
The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk also closed various attractions due to the hazardous conditions while keeping some areas operational.
