A section of the Santa Cruz Municipal Wharf experienced a significant collapse on Monday at approximately 12:44 p.m., creating a dramatic scene as around 150 feet of the structure fell into the ocean. This unfortunate incident occurred amid a $4 million repair project aimed at addressing damages from previous winter storms.
At the time of the collapse, three individuals were present on the wharf. Fortunately, two were successfully rescued, while the third was able to swim to safety. All three were treated for minor injuries but were released shortly thereafter. The immediate area was evacuated quickly, and officials confirmed that the Dolphin Restaurant and a restroom were among the facilities lost in the collapse.
City officials, including Matt Huffaker, stated that the engineering team had been closely monitoring the wharf’s condition. Despite ongoing assessments and predictions for safety, the abruptness of the collapse serves as a reminder of nature’s unpredictability. Witness Landon Ky mentioned feeling the structure sway before the collapse, which added to the concern and urgency of the situation.
The Santa Cruz Harbor and nearby beaches—Main Beach and Cowell’s Beach—are currently closed, with the city prioritizing safety as they conduct an evaluation of the structural integrity and extent of the damages. Though some nearby businesses remain open, access and parking have been severely curtailed due to hazardous conditions.
