The 2025 TISI Sangam World Cup is currently underway, marking a vibrant return after a decade-long hiatus. As the tournament enters its third day, board chairperson Upendra Gounder has expressed his satisfaction with the event’s progress, noting the enthusiasm of both local and overseas teams participating in the soccer matches that began on Thursday.
“The tournament started well, and we’ve seen excellent progress throughout the day,” Gounder remarked. He observed that the competition between local and international teams has been intense, with players demonstrating remarkable passion and determination despite the challenging heat conditions. “The heat has been a factor affecting teams, but evening matches have seen quality performances as the weather cools down,” he added, indicating that the competitive spirit has remained high.
This year’s edition of the Sangam World Cup features not only soccer but also new sporting events like snooker, alongside popular staples such as golf and netball. Gounder emphasized the palpable enthusiasm among players from various nations who have come together to celebrate their cultural heritage, stating, “The excitement surrounding the tournament is infectious.”
With four days of thrilling competitions still ahead, Gounder is optimistic about who will emerge victorious. He expressed gratitude to the organizing committee for reviving this cherished event, as well as to the Lautoka City Council for providing a suitable venue and ensuring security throughout the tournament.
Furthermore, he extended his best wishes to the players who have traveled great distances to be part of this celebration of sport and culture, reinforcing the significance of such gatherings in fostering community ties and a shared cultural identity. The hope conveyed by Gounder reflects the broader narrative of unity and community spirit that the Sangam World Cup seeks to promote. As the tournament unfolds, it stands to amplify a sense of togetherness and excitement amongst participants and spectators alike.
