Sangam World Cup 2025 Kicks Off in Fiji With Masters Showdown

The 2025 TISI Sangam World Cup kicked off yesterday at Churchill Park in Lautoka, showcasing thrilling matches in the Masters division and setting the stage for an electrifying tournament ahead. The inaugural match saw New Zealand Papatoetoe Masters narrowly defeat Lautoka Masters with a score of 2-1. In another strong showing, New Zealand Middlemore Masters dominated Ba Masters with a decisive 4-0 victory, while Nadi Uciwai Masters secured a close win against Australia Sydney Masters, finishing 1-0.

Upendra Gounder, chairperson of the games board, expressed his excitement about the tournament’s kickoff, noting the energy and competitive spirit among the teams. Despite a somewhat slow start, Gounder indicated that the momentum picked up significantly as the day progressed. “We thought the weather would be a factor for the overseas teams, but they did well,” he added, highlighting the preparation and adaptability of the teams competing.

The tournament, which began on October 26, marks a significant occasion for TISI Sangam Fiji as it celebrates the centennial anniversary leading up to the milestone in April 2026. This year’s event returns to Fiji after an 11-year hiatus and includes participation from various local and international teams in multiple divisions—Premier, Masters, and Legends—as well as competitions in netball, golf, and snooker.

The Sangam World Cup not only serves as a platform for athletic prowess but also strengthens community ties and cultural heritage among participants and spectators. Gounder noted, “Most teams have come prepared, and the excitement is definitely there,” emphasizing the unity and camaraderie that such tournaments foster.

As the competition continues, teams will vie for early points and national pride, with more matches scheduled across different categories. The anticipated participation and vibrant atmosphere signal a hopeful and exciting journey for all involved in this biennial celebration of sports and culture in the heart of Fiji.
