San Francisco Mayor Daniel Lurie emerged unharmed after his vehicle was involved in a violent altercation Thursday evening near the Tenderloin district. However, a member of his security detail, an officer from the San Francisco Police Department (SFPD), sustained injuries during the incident.
The confrontation occurred around 5:40 p.m. at the intersection of Cedar and Polk streets, where police reported that the mayor’s vehicle was blocked by multiple individuals. According to a spokesperson from the mayor’s office, while Lurie was not directly involved in the altercation, the situation escalated quickly, leading to scuffles between his security detail and two male suspects.
“We appreciate our SFPD officers for their quick response and for keeping our city safe every day,” the spokesperson stated, underscoring the professionalism and bravery of law enforcement in managing the situation.
Images from the scene captured one suspect subdued and handcuffed on the ground, surrounded by responding officers, while another altercation involving a security detail member was reported to be particularly intense. Although officials did not disclose the cause of the altercation, witnesses indicated that initial attempts to clear the area were met with resistance, resulting in physical confrontations.
Both suspects were taken into custody, although their names have not yet been released. The police confirmed that several officers, including members of the mayor’s security team, suffered non-life-threatening injuries, all of whom were treated on the scene.
Louis Wong, president of the San Francisco Police Officers Association, expressed gratitude for the swift actions of the officers assigned to the mayor’s protection, emphasizing their crucial role in deescalating a potentially more dangerous situation.
“This was a chaotic and unpredictable scenario, and we are relieved that no serious injuries occurred,” Wong stated, wishing a quick recovery for the injured officer.
