San Diego State Volleyball Advances to Mountain West Championship Semifinals, Faces Colorado State Next

LAS VEGAS – The sixth-seeded San Diego State volleyball team delivered an impressive performance, defeating No. 3 seed Wyoming with a decisive 3-0 sweep (25-21, 25-20, 25-19) in the first round of the 2025 Credit Union 1 Mountain West Championship held at The Pavilion on the UNLV campus.

San Diego State (15-15) showcased its strength by out-hitting the Cowgirls .294 to .216 and leading in kills (48-33) and digs (50-39). This victory secures the Aztecs a place in the semifinal round, where they will face second-seeded Colorado State on Friday, Nov. 28, at 4 p.m. PT.

The Aztecs, who had suffered a sweep from Wyoming on Nov. 15, controlled much of the match, allowing only brief leads for the Cowgirls early in the second set. This marks San Diego State’s third consecutive win in a first-round match at the Mountain West Championship since the tournament’s return in 2021. The team’s record has improved to 9-0 when leading after two sets and 7-2 in three-set matches, while Wyoming concludes its season at 17-13.

Madison Corf led the Aztecs with a match-high 15 kills and an impressive hitting percentage of .440. Teammate Talea Mitchell efficiently contributed 11 kills, hitting .611 without any errors during her 18 attempts. Supporting the team’s attack were Ella Schabort, with seven kills, and Campbell Hague, who delivered five kills with a .444 efficiency.

The Aztecs demonstrated their tactical proficiency, especially in the first set, where they achieved their highest hitting percentage of the match at .341 with 19 kills against five errors. Corf excelled in this opening frame, contributing six kills to help the Aztecs fend off a late challenge from Wyoming, culminating in a strong finish with a 7-4 run.

Following their commanding performance in the first two sets, San Diego State maintained their momentum in the third set, breaking away from a tight score with an 8-3 run, which included two service aces from Kendall Mairs. Corf delivered the match-winning point, sealing the victory as the Aztecs celebrated their hard-fought win.

Wyoming’s Sarah Holcomb led her team with 11 kills and five blocks, while Addy Cook added six kills in the defeat.

Looking ahead, if San Diego State prevails against Colorado State, they will advance to the championship final on Saturday, Nov. 29, at 3 p.m. PT, where they could face the winner of the match between Boise State and top-seeded Utah State. San Diego State previously lost to Colorado State in their regular-season matchup on Nov. 13, and they aim to reverse that outcome in the upcoming semifinal.

This victory not only highlights the Aztecs’ resilience but also sets a hopeful tone for their continued pursuit of a championship title.
