Good Thursday morning, San Diego!

Today marks the annual Great California ShakeOut, an event in which millions of residents across the state participate to enhance earthquake preparedness awareness. In San Diego County alone, almost one million residents are on board to practice the critical “drop, cover and hold on” drill at 10:16 a.m. This year, there are 980,458 registered participants in San Diego, contributing to a statewide total of over 10.3 million. The ShakeOut has been a staple since its inception in 2008, emphasizing the importance of preparation in the face of natural disasters.

Participants in the drill will also have the opportunity to engage with a unique “shake trailer” simulation at Waterfront Park from 6 a.m. to noon, which will allow attendees to experience a simulated earthquake measuring up to 7.0 in magnitude. Throughout the event, the California Governor’s Office of Emergency Services will provide important information on earthquake preparedness, including early warning technology and necessary safety actions.

Numerous local municipalities, including Imperial Beach, National City, Oceanside, Santee, and Solana Beach, as well as institutions like the San Diego County Office of Emergency Services and various educational districts, will take part in the drill. Local officials underscore the gravity of preparation, warning that a significant seismic event could have catastrophic consequences along the southernmost section of the San Andreas Fault, potentially resulting in extensive damage and loss of life.

In other news, active-duty military personnel were relieved to receive their mid-month paychecks yesterday, a much-appreciated relief amid ongoing uncertainty stemming from the federal government shutdown. Local non-profits are stepping up to support military families during this challenging time, addressing the anxieties that accompany the shutdown.

Lastly, with the exponential growth of streaming service options, consumers may feel overwhelmed by the rising subscription costs. Experts suggest strategies to help viewers save money while still enjoying their favorite shows without sacrificing quality.

Stay informed and prepared, San Diego!
