San Antonio’s Transit Revolution: Fueling Sustainability with Local Innovation

VIA Metropolitan Transit, in collaboration with key partners including Republic Services, EDL, and CPS Energy, recently celebrated the third anniversary of their sustainable initiative aimed at enhancing public transportation in San Antonio. This partnership, which began operations in 2022, focuses on converting methane-rich landfill gas into renewable natural gas (RNG) to power VIA’s fleet of compressed natural gas (CNG) buses.

The RNG facility, located at Republic Services’ Tessman Road Landfill, processes substantial amounts of gas captured from a network of 265 gas recovery wells. The facility is capable of generating enough renewable natural gas to replace approximately seven million gallons of diesel fuel annually, significantly contributing to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions.

Bill Rich, General Manager of Republic Services, emphasized the importance of such collaborations in achieving sustainability goals, aiming for a 50% increase in biogas reuse by 2030. The project is noted for its innovative approach to converting community waste into a sustainable energy source.

VIA President & CEO Jon Gary Herrera highlighted the critical role public transit plays in the community, noting that more than half of the fuel used by VIA’s fleet over the past year has come from local renewable resources. This transition supports economic growth while advancing environmental objectives.

CPS Energy President and CEO Rudy Garza remarked on the pioneering nature of this RNG project, which aligns with the agency’s broader strategy to implement innovative solutions for the community. The successful integration of RNG into the local energy system showcases a substantial step toward reducing emissions in the Greater San Antonio area.

In 2024, VIA provided over 30 million trips, demonstrating the essential service public transit offers to San Antonio residents in their daily lives. This milestone not only reflects the commitment to mobility but also highlights the positive impact of utilizing sustainable energy sources in transportation.

This initiative stands as a hopeful example of how local collaborations can lead to significant advancements in sustainable practices while fostering economic growth and environmental preservation.
