Samsung Workers Rally for Change: The Largest Strike in History

Employees from the National Samsung Electronics Union (NSEU) in South Korea organized a large rally on Monday, marking the third week of their strike for improved working conditions and higher wages. Approximately 1,200 workers participated in the demonstration at the Giheung campus in Yongin.

The rally followed preliminary wage negotiation discussions between the union and Samsung that took place on Friday. The strike, which began on July 8, was initiated after an earlier walkout failed to achieve the desired outcomes regarding workplace improvements.

While the NSEU represents over 30,000 employees, it remains unclear how many have joined the indefinite strike, which is noted to be the largest in Samsung’s history. The company anticipates a significant surge in second-quarter revenue, projecting a rise of more than 1,450% year-over-year due to a boom in artificial intelligence. Additionally, Samsung reported a tenfold increase in profits for the first quarter of 2024. Despite these financial successes, the NSEU claims that workers have not seen corresponding increases in their compensation.

Many striking workers are employed in Samsung’s foundry, which produces some of the world’s most advanced computer chips. Experts indicate that Samsung has a history of being resistant to unions, often lacking experience in negotiating with its workforce.

Academics believe that if the workers succeed in their efforts, it could strengthen labor movements across South Korea.
