Motuopua’a Henny Papalii, the Member of Parliament representing Vaisigano No.2, formally resigned from his parliamentary role on Tuesday to align himself with the Fa’atuaatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi (FAST) Party. This pivotal decision will lead to a by-election where Motuopua’a will seek to retain his seat under the FAST banner.

In his farewell speech to parliament, Motuopua’a articulated that his choice to transition to the FAST Party stems from the desires of his constituents. He asserted, “I am your servant that you voted for, prayers and support are needed from you as I am ready to leave this seat and go back to a by-election as the law says,” highlighting his willingness to honor legal requirements while maintaining a focus on serving the people.

The outgoing MP also expressed gratitude to his constituents for their support throughout his service, acknowledging any shortcomings he faced during his tenure. “Obeying you is obeying justice and God; may God bless the Parliament of Samoa,” he added, underscoring his dedication to his role and commitment to the community.

Prime Minister La’aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt recognized Motuopua’a’s vision and aspirations, extending well wishes as he prepares for the electoral process ahead. The Prime Minister reflected on the challenges that come with such significant decisions, indicating that transitioning to a new political role and facing the electorate again is no small feat.

Speaker of Parliament, Auapa’au Mulipola Aloitafua, also acknowledged Motuopua’a’s contributions, wishing him success in his future pursuits.

Elected during last year’s general elections in August, Motuopua’a officially joined the FAST Party just last Saturday, a move that has been welcomed by his constituents. This shift not only marks a personal milestone for Motuopua’a but also highlights the evolving political landscape within Samoa’s government, indicating a dynamic shift in its parliamentary framework. The developments indicate a potentially transformative time for political representation in Samoa, fostering an environment for change and community engagement.
