Sam Foster is campaigning for mayor of Marietta against the incumbent, Steve “Thunder” Tumlin, heading into the November 4 election. Foster’s campaign is rooted in addressing key issues such as affordability, pedestrian safety, and the need for responsive governance. He expressed his belief that the city needs leaders who are attentive to the everyday challenges faced by residents.

Foster, a DevOps engineer and community organizer who co-founded the nonprofit advocacy group A Better Cobb, criticized Tumlin for his past vetoes, particularly regarding the Juneteenth celebration and several housing projects. Foster characterized these actions as significant “roadblocks to progress,” asserting that they demonstrate a disregard for the community’s evolving needs.

With a focus on improving quality of life, Foster emphasized the need for more affordable living options, better bike and pedestrian infrastructure, and solutions to traffic congestion. He voiced concerns that many young professionals in the area find it challenging to live where they work, signaling a disconnect between current governance and the needs of diverse demographics.

The candidate has actively engaged with the community through his campaign, knocking on over 14,000 doors in an effort to connect with voters before election day. “I do love Marietta,” Foster stated, emphasizing his desire for leadership that elevates the community and addresses its pressing challenges.

On the other side, Mayor Steve Tumlin, who has held the office since 2010, has aimed to maintain Marietta’s small-town charm amidst rapid growth while enhancing downtown development and public safety. His administration has implemented policies to control high-density apartment construction and foster community partnerships, earning national recognition.

As the election approaches, the outcome will not only determine Marietta’s leadership for the next four years but also reflect the community’s priorities as it grapples with growth and modernization. Voters in Georgia are encouraged to check their registration status and familiarize themselves with polling locations to ensure their voices are heard in this critical election.
