Sam Altman’s Bold Move: Funding America’s Largest Basic Income Experiment

Sam Altman, the CEO of OpenAI, has funded the largest basic income study in the United States to date through his nonprofit organization, OpenResearch. The initiative involved providing unconditional cash payments to individuals living below the poverty line for three years.

The study included approximately 3,000 participants aged between 21 and 40 from Texas and Illinois, all of whom earned less than $30,000 annually. One-third of these participants received $1,000 monthly, while the remaining individuals in a control group received just $50.

Findings from the study indicated that those receiving larger cash payments were better positioned to pursue employment opportunities that aligned with their preferences. The authors noted, “Cash can increase people’s agency to make employment decisions that fit their individual circumstances, goals, and values. Recipients were more likely to be searching for a job but were also more selective in their choices.”

One study participant shared their experience, stating, “Thanks to the cash transfer and the ability to save, I can finally be picky. I don’t have to accept a poor job just for income; I can afford to hold out for the right fit.” Another recipient mentioned that the financial assistance allowed them to take an entry-level job in a desired field, which eventually led to a six-figure salary within two years. “Without those cash transfers, I could not have accepted the pay cut,” they explained.

The research revealed no significant difference in employment levels between the cash recipients and the control group. Participants primarily used the funds to cover essential expenses, including food, housing, and transportation. Additionally, the payments helped them finance health-related needs, such as dental braces and treatment for alcoholism. While the cash assistance initially alleviated some stress, many of the health benefits diminished over time.

Sam Altman has voiced his support for universal basic income as automation and artificial intelligence continue to transform the job market and displace certain roles.

Correction: An earlier version of this article incorrectly identified the organization conducting the study as OpenAI, when it was actually Sam Altman’s nonprofit, OpenResearch.
