Rochester, N.Y. – The Salvation Army upheld its long-standing tradition on Friday by honoring local first responders in celebration of National Donut Day. This annual event, which traces its origins back to 1917, began when volunteers provided donuts to soldiers during World War I.
Over a century later, the Salvation Army continues this legacy by delivering these sweet treats to first responders, including members of the Rochester Police and Rochester Fire Departments, as a gesture of gratitude for their unwavering commitment to public safety.
Michael Gilbert, the Director of Development with the Salvation Army of Greater Rochester, expressed deep respect for the hard work of these professionals: “We know how hard they work. How difficult the job they have day in and day out 24/7. We have so much respect for what they do that we felt this was just one way of saying thank you.”
This year’s celebration was enhanced by a partnership with Donuts Delite, which provided the delicious pastries for the occasion.
Through this act of kindness, the Salvation Army not only honors the dedication of first responders but also reinforces the community spirit that maintains strong ties between service organizations and those who serve the public. Such initiatives highlight the importance of recognizing and appreciating the efforts of individuals who put their lives on the line for others.
