Rising sea levels and inadequate drainage systems are emerging as critical threats to agricultural lands in Fiji, according to Tomasi Tunabuna, the Minister for Agriculture and Waterways. He highlighted that saltwater intrusion has become a major challenge for local farmers, jeopardizing soil fertility and leading to reduced crop yields.
“Saltwater intrusion into our agricultural lands due to rising sea levels and global warming is one of the most pressing issues we face,” Tunabuna emphasized during a recent address. In response to this urgent challenge, the government has reinstated the national drainage board to improve water management and address waterlogging issues in farmland.
While there have been no formal complaints regarding dust pollution from roads near Navua’s farmlands, the Minister voiced concerns about the broader impacts of climate change on agricultural productivity in coastal communities. Tunabuna assured that the Ministry is actively working with stakeholders to strengthen resilience and safeguard vulnerable farmland across the nation.
This challenge extends beyond Tunabuna’s district, as farmers throughout Fiji are grappling with the severe effects of saltwater intrusion and poor drainage systems. In Wailevu, Labasa, local farmers have reported that saltwater has severely damaged cane crops, causing production declines of nearly 50%. These communities have long advocated for enhanced drainage management, which the government is now addressing by upgrading floodgates and implementing drainage improvements.

As the government works to revitalize drainage systems, there is optimism among the farming community that these initiatives will help sustain agricultural practices and bolster food security.
