Salmonella Scare: Massive Egg Recall Sparks Health Warning in Multiple States

Wisconsin health officials have announced a recall of eggs after an outbreak of salmonella infections linked to a farm in the state. Sixty-five individuals across nine states have been infected, with 42 cases reported in Wisconsin alone, where the eggs were thought to be sold.

The Wisconsin Department of Health Services indicated in a statement that the eggs were distributed in Wisconsin, Illinois, and Michigan, reaching both retail stores and food service distributors. The recall affects all types of eggs, including conventional, cage-free, organic, and non-GMO, across various carton sizes and expiration dates. These products are labeled under “Milo’s Poultry Farms” or “Tony’s Fresh Market.”

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirmed the salmonella outbreak, which has resulted in 24 hospitalizations but no fatalities as of the latest report. The affected states include Wisconsin, Illinois, Michigan, Minnesota, Iowa, Virginia, Colorado, Utah, and California.

The recall was initiated by Milo’s Poultry Farms LLC, based in Bonduel, Wisconsin. The health department has advised anyone who purchased the affected eggs not to consume them and to dispose of them immediately. Restaurants are also instructed not to sell or serve these recalled eggs.

Those who have consumed the eggs and are experiencing symptoms, such as diarrhea, abdominal pain, fever, and vomiting, are urged to seek medical attention.

In July, the U.S. Department of Agriculture introduced new measures aimed at reducing salmonella in poultry products. These measures include requiring poultry companies to maintain salmonella levels below a designated threshold and to conduct tests for six particularly harmful strains of the bacteria.

The CDC estimates that salmonella contributes to 1.35 million infections each year in the U.S., primarily through food, resulting in approximately 420 deaths annually. The U.S. Department of Agriculture approximates that chicken is responsible for 125,000 infections, while turkey accounts for 43,000 each year.
