The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), along with public health and regulatory authorities, is actively investigating a multistate outbreak of Salmonella Enteritidis linked to eggs from August Egg Company. As of June 5, 2025, there have been 79 reported cases across seven states, with victims showing symptoms starting between February 24 and May 17.

Of those affected, 21 individuals have been hospitalized, although no deaths have been recorded. Authorities emphasize that the actual number of infections could be much higher, as many individuals recover independently and do not seek medical attention or testing. Epidemiological data suggest that six of the sick individuals traveled to California or Nevada prior to falling ill, indicating possible connections to these regions.

Investigation into the demographics of the affected individuals reveals a median age of 48, and the majority are white females. Public health officials have been conducting interviews to gather information about the foods consumed before illness onset, discovering that 90% of those interviewed reported eating eggs. Two restaurants have been identified where multiple cases occurred, indicating possible sub-clusters of infection related to these establishments.

Through laboratory analysis, the CDC’s PulseNet system revealed that the Salmonella strains identified in sick individuals share genetic similarities. FDA inspections of the August Egg Company’s facility confirmed the presence of Salmonella in some egg samples. Notably, the bacteria exhibited resistance to certain antibiotics, underscoring the need for tailored treatment options for those affected.

As a critical public health response, August Egg Company has recalled the affected eggs, and the CDC is advising the public to refrain from consuming, selling, or serving these recalled products.

This investigation highlights ongoing challenges in controlling foodborne illnesses and the importance of quick public health responses to protect consumers.
