ABU DHABI – Muslim Salikhov is eager to make a statement at UFC on ABC 9, where he hopes a decisive victory will finally grab the attention of fellow welterweight Stephen Thompson.
Salikhov (21-5 MMA, 8-4 UFC) will face Carlos Leal (22-6 MMA, 1-1 UFC) in a welterweight matchup on Saturday’s prelims, airing on ABC, ESPN, and ESPN+. Known for his powerful striking, Leal has achieved five consecutive wins by knockout, making it clear that he will apply pressure during their bout. However, Salikhov, nicknamed the “King of Kung Fu,” believes he possesses the superior skills needed to outstrike Leal.
“This is a very tough fight because this guy is strong, has a good chin, and constantly pressures his opponents,” Salikhov told MMA Junkie. “He’s strong and faster than me, but I truly believe that I am better. If he chooses to engage in striking, I’m confident I’ll secure the knockout.”
After an impressive knockout victory over Song Kenan last November, Salikhov called out Stephen Thompson, but has yet to receive a response. He remains hopeful that a win against Leal could pave the way for a future matchup against the renowned striker.
“Fighting ‘Wonderboy’ is very interesting to me,” Salikhov remarked. “I don’t care that he’s currently unranked; I have wanted to fight him since my first win in the UFC. I don’t know why he hasn’t responded to my calls, despite my numerous knockouts and engaging fights. Perhaps after this fight, he will reconsider.”
Salikhov is keen on the opportunity to showcase their contrasting styles – his kung fu against Thompson’s karate – in what promises to be an exciting bout for fans. At 42, Thompson remains a formidable competitor, and Salikhov is ready to rise to the challenge.
This bout represents not only a chance for Salikhov to establish himself in the welterweight division but also an opportunity to capture the attention of the MMA community with a thrilling performance. The anticipation surrounding the event is palpable, and fans are eager to see who will come out on top in this matchup of contrasting fighting styles.
