Saleh’s Strategic Shift: Packers Welcome Former Jets Coach

Robert Saleh has quickly found a new opportunity in the NFL, just two weeks after his dismissal from the New York Jets. On Wednesday, Saleh joined the Green Bay Packers, where he will play a “fluid” role on the team, as described by head coach Matt LaFleur.

LaFleur expressed appreciation for Saleh’s contributions to his coaching career and has brought him on board to enhance the team’s offensive strategy. During the practice session, Saleh observed the offensive unit, providing insights based on his defensive expertise.

“I think it helps,” LaFleur stated, highlighting the advantages of having a defensive mindset involved in offensive discussions. He emphasized that Saleh’s insights could be beneficial in deciphering what defenses might be planning.

Saleh will continue with the team throughout the week, staying at LaFleur’s home as he transitions into his new role. The two coaches share a long history, dating back to their time together as graduate assistants at Central Michigan University in 2004.

Their connection extends beyond their early careers, with LaFleur even serving as the best man at Saleh’s wedding. Saleh’s previous collaboration with Packers defensive coordinator Jeff Hafley will not impact his current role, as LaFleur wants Hafley and his staff to maintain their current approach.

Saleh’s tenure with the Jets was cut short after a challenging start to the season, finishing with a record of 20-36 over more than three seasons and failing to reach the playoffs. Despite the abrupt end to his time in New York, LaFleur noted Saleh’s passion for football and his eagerness to contribute once more.

Overall, the addition of Saleh is seen as a strategic move for the Packers, aiming to fortify their offense by capitalizing on his defensive insights. Quarterback Jordan Love echoed this sentiment, noting the potential benefits of having an additional perspective on offensive schemes.

The Packers will not face the Jets this season, meaning Saleh can focus solely on his new responsibilities in Green Bay. This marks a continuation of LaFleur’s practice of enhancing his staff midseason, following his previous hiring of Aubrey Pleasant in November 2022.
