Last month, 18-year-old Sakiusa Deans Tuicakau Bainivalu celebrated a significant achievement in his educational journey, taking the title of Dux of Queen Victoria School for 2025. This accolade not only highlights his academic excellence but also underscores his resilience and dedication, making his story truly inspirational.
Originating from Tabuya village in Kadavu, Sakiusa, affectionately known as Saki, is the eldest son of Alitia Bainivalu, who holds the position of Fiji’s Minister for Forestry and Fisheries. Saki’s academic journey has been marked by numerous accolades and recognitions, reflecting his hard work and commitment. At Queen Victoria School, he excelled in numerous subjects, securing the top spot in Year 13 Science and winning Best Student awards across Mathematics, Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Science. His exceptional performance was further demonstrated by achieving the highest overall score in the Fiji Year 12 Certificate Examination of 2024.
To honor Saki’s impressive accomplishments, his parents hosted a heartfelt thanksgiving gathering at their home in Domain, Suva, on December 13, 2025. The event brought together family and friends, celebrating not only Saki’s success but also the values that have guided him: humility, gratitude, and perseverance. During the gathering, Ms. Bainivalu expressed her pride in Saki’s dedication, emphasizing that his achievements reflect his character as much as his intelligence.
As he prepares to move forward in his life—whether through further studies or community involvement—Ms. Bainivalu imparted three important pieces of advice to Saki: to always thank God in both joyful and challenging times, to remain aware of his origins and the sacrifices made for his education, and to choose kindness in every situation.
Sakiusa has also shown a strong sense of responsibility during his time at school, sharing that he encountered hardships while boarding and even took initiative to maintain cleanliness, particularly by ensuring the toilets were kept in good condition for the younger students.
