In an unexpected twist for the New Orleans Saints as they prepare for their final game of the season, Jake Haener will be stepping in as Tyler Shough’s backup quarterback against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 18, replacing Spencer Rattler. The Saints elevated Haener from their practice squad for the game alongside veteran running back Nyheim Hines, who is also set for his debut with the team.

Rattler was unable to practice this week due to a finger injury, leading the Saints to make Haener available should Shough need to exit the game. While there is speculation about protecting Rattler from further injury in light of potential trade discussions this offseason, it remains uncertain. Ideally, Shough will play through the game without any issues.

With Alvin Kamara ruled out for Sunday’s matchup, Hines will serve as a backup for running backs Audric Estime and Evan Hull. Estime is expected to take the lead following a strong performance last week, where he rushed for 94 yards on just 14 carries. This marks Hines’ first game with the Saints after previously participating in three contests with the Los Angeles Chargers earlier in the season, primarily focusing on special teams.

Additionally, tight end Treyton Welch has been promoted to the 53-man roster, stepping into a significant role due to injuries. The Saints placed both Jack Stoll and Zaire Mitchell-Paden on injured reserve, joining Foster Moreau and Mason Pline. Currently, Welch will join Juwan Johnson and Moliki Matavao as the only healthy tight ends, presenting him a valuable opportunity to contribute after training alongside Shough on the scout team earlier in the season.

With these strategic roster changes, the Saints are aiming to finish the season on a high note, leveraging the new opportunities presented to their players. The anticipation builds as they head into a pivotal game against the Falcons.
