Oliver Widger, a 29-year-old from Oregon, has successfully completed a remarkable journey from the Oregon coast to Hawaii with his cat, Phoenix. Widger, who documented his experiences on social media under the name “sailing_with_phoenix,” was welcomed by enthusiastic supporters upon his arrival at the Waikiki Yacht Club on Saturday. Hawaii’s Governor Josh Green also greeted him, acknowledging the significance of his adventure which has inspired a growing fan base.
Widger’s decision to set sail came after a personal diagnosis of Klippel-Feil syndrome, a rare condition that increased his awareness of life’s fragility and ultimately spurred him to seek a more fulfilling existence outside of an unfulfilling job. He sold his possessions and invested his retirement savings to pursue his dream of sailing around the world, starting with his journey to Hawaii.
The trip, which Widger started in late April, tested his sailing skills, which he largely taught himself through online resources. Faced with challenges, including a rudder failure, he celebrated joyful moments spotting marine wildlife and tranquil Pacific waters along the way. Despite some apprehensions about tackling the vastness of the ocean, he maintained connection with his friends using communication technologies, noting how modern tools differ from the experiences of sailors in the past.
Widger now considers future adventures, possibly venturing toward French Polynesia, but acknowledges the need for maintenance on his boat before taking the next steps.
