The Suva Magistrate’s Court has ruled in absentia to impose a prison sentence on Sagar Sharma for his involvement in an aggravated robbery case from last year. Sharma, who pleaded not guilty to the charges, was sentenced to three years in prison for stealing personal items and cash from a victim in March 2024.
Court records detail how the incident unfolded when the victim visited Sharma’s residence after experiencing car trouble. Following a taxi trip to retrieve a spare tire, the two men, accompanied by an unidentified individual, consumed alcohol at Sharma’s house. It was then that the third man restrained the victim and proceeded to rob him of his silver chain, Apple mobile phone, and wallet containing $450 in cash.
Despite being warned in December about the consequences of not appearing for trial, Sharma failed to attend court proceedings. Magistrate Charles Ratakele has indicated that the sentence will take effect once Sharma is apprehended.
The prosecution was represented by Lawyers Shahil Kumar and Pooja Mishra, while Tobia Ravuniwa defended Sharma. This case highlights the continuing vigilance of the judicial system in addressing aggravated robbery and the serious implications such crimes have on community safety.
There is a pressing need for individuals to recognize the impact of their actions on others and to adhere to the law, which aims to protect the rights and belongings of all citizens. Cases like this underscore the importance of accountability in deterring future offenses, fostering a safer environment for communities in Suva.
