The 31st annual Screen Actors Guild Awards took place on Sunday night, honoring outstanding achievements in film and television. In a notable highlight, Kieran Culkin received the award for Best Supporting Actor in a Film for his performance in “A Real Pain,” while Zoe Saldaña earned the accolade for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her work in “Emilia Pérez.”
On the television front, the drama series “Shogun” excelled with three wins, including Best Drama Series Ensemble. Anna Sawai was recognized as Best Actress in a Drama Series, and Hiroyuki Sanada took home the award for Best Actor in the same category.
The comedy series “Only Murders in the Building” triumphed as Best Comedy Series Ensemble, with Martin Short winning the Best Actor in a Comedy Series award for his role on the show. Jean Smart also celebrated her win as Best Actress in a Comedy Series for her portrayal in “Hacks.”
In the TV movie or limited series category, Jessica Gunning won for her role in “Baby Reindeer,” just a day after receiving the Independent Spirit Award for the same performance. Colin Farrell was honored with the Best Actor award for “The Penguin.”
Heading into the awards, “Wicked” led the film nominations with five nods, followed closely by “A Complete Unknown” with four. Films “Emilia Pérez” and “Anora” each received three nominations. All four films contended for the prestigious Best Cast award, along with “Conclave” and “The Last Showgirl,” which each garnered two nominations.
On the television side, “Shogun” topped the nominations with five, followed by “The Bear” with four and “The Diplomat” with three.
The ceremony, hosted by Kristen Bell—who was also nominated for best performance by a female actor in a comedy series for “Nobody Wants This”—was streamed live on Netflix from the Shrine Auditorium and Expo Hall in Los Angeles.
Additionally, legendary actress Jane Fonda was honored with the prestigious Life Achievement Award during the ceremony.
It’s worth noting that prior to the event, the guild had to cancel its in-person nominees’ announcement due to severe wildfires in Los Angeles, opting to share the nominations via a press release instead. The guild encouraged contributions to the SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s natural disaster relief fund, emphasizing the importance of helping those affected by the disasters.
This year’s SAG Awards not only celebrated exceptional talent but also highlighted the resilience of the industry in facing challenges.
