The Sacramento Kings are reportedly considering potential trade options involving veteran player DeMar DeRozan, with speculation suggesting he could be a notable candidate for a buyout if he remains with the team past the looming trade deadline. Chris Mannix from Sports Illustrated characterized DeRozan as a “strong” buyout possibility. However, in a recent report by ESPN’s Anthony Slater, team sources have firmly stated that the Kings have “zero plans” to buy out the six-time All-Star if no deal is completed before the deadline, with discussions regarding a buyout reportedly not even beginning with DeRozan’s camp.

At 36 years old, DeRozan is currently contractually earning $24.6 million this season, and $25.7 million in the 2026/27 season. A key aspect of his contract is that only $10 million of his salary for the next season is guaranteed. Cap specialist Yossi Gozlan pointed out that it would not be beneficial for DeRozan to agree to a buyout as it would eliminate the chance for an increase in his partial guarantee through a potential trade during the summer.

Slater noted that the Kings are not actively looking to move DeRozan immediately and might feel comfortable waiting until the offseason to explore trade opportunities or reconsider parting ways. While DeRozan has made it clear he is not advocating for a trade, he has expressed a desire to be involved in more competitive games, particularly as the Kings are currently struggling with a 12-39 record, which places them near the bottom of the league standings.

Despite the team’s challenges, DeRozan is described as maintaining a positive influence in the locker room, garnering respect and praise from teammates, coaches, and front office members for his professionalism. This situation reflects the complexities teams face as they navigate trades and roster changes while also considering the sentiments of veteran players who contribute positively to the team culture, even in difficult seasons.
