Sabrina Carpenter’s new video for her latest single “Taste,” part of her newly released sixth album “Short n’ Sweet,” opens with a “graphic violence” warning that suggests a shift from the playful revenge themes of her previous works. However, the cartoonish violence displayed in the clip, featuring over-the-top scenarios reminiscent of a Quentin Tarantino film and nods to the 1992 movie “Death Becomes Her,” maintains a humorous tone.
In the video, Carpenter and Jenna Ortega engage in a fierce competition over a boyfriend, played by fellow “Halloween” actor Rohan Campbell. Their antics include Ortega setting Carpenter on fire, lopping off her arm, tossing her out of a window, and even impaling her on a white picket fence. Yet, the exaggerated violence is played for laughs, with Carpenter holding her own in the chaos. In a comedic twist, the two end up discussing their love interest as they leave his funeral, coffee cups in hand.
Carpenter co-wrote “Taste” with Julia Michaels and Amy Allen, while John Ryan and Ian Kirkpatrick took care of production. “Short n’ Sweet,” which dropped recently, features other notable tracks including “Please Please Please” and “Espresso,” along with several unreleased songs.
In an interview with Variety, Carpenter characterized the album as “the hot older sister” to her previous work, stating, “It’s my second ‘big girl’ album.” She expressed pride in her increased creative autonomy, describing this project as a true sophomore album.
Additionally, Carpenter’s “Sweet n’ Sour” tour is set to kick off its North American leg on September 23 in Columbus, Ohio, before heading to the UK and Europe in 2025. The tour includes a sold-out series of 33 arena shows across North America, with performances scheduled at iconic venues such as Madison Square Garden in New York and Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles. Supporting artists for the North American leg include Amaarae, Griff, and Declan McKenna, while Rachel Chinouriri will join for the international dates.
