As of Wednesday, March 4, new developments surrounding the Buffalo Sabres and St. Louis Blues suggest that discussions continue regarding defenseman Colton Parayko, despite prior reports indicating an impasse concerning center Robert Thomas. NHL insider Darren Dreger has revealed that a trade involving Parayko is nearing completion, with the Sabres prepared to make a significant investment for the skilled defenseman.

Parayko, who is coming off a notable performance in the Winter Olympics, is expected to enhance the Sabres’ defensive capabilities. It’s reported that the deal will include Radim Mrtka, an 18-year-old defenseman who was selected by the Sabres as the 9th overall pick in 2025, a move that has already been viewed as highly promising. Additionally, a first-round pick is anticipated to be part of the trade package, although it remains unclear whether this will pertain to the upcoming 2026 Draft or a future draft year.

Financially, incorporating Parayko into the Sabres’ lineup will result in a considerable commitment, especially as he is currently in the fourth year of an eight-year, $52 million contract. The Sabres are aiming to bolster their defensive lineup, which could provide their current top defensive pairs with more opportunities to rest, particularly given the limited ice-time allocation currently being handed to the third defensive pair.

Parayko, a veteran player in his 11th NHL season, has participated in 58 games this season, contributing one goal and 14 assists while averaging over 22 minutes of ice time per game. Over his career, he has played in 781 games, accumulating 78 goals and 231 assists. He was a crucial player in the St. Louis Blues’ triumph during the 2019 Stanley Cup and possesses a No Trade Clause that he will need to waive for the trade to proceed.

This potential trade signifies an ambitious move by the Sabres to strengthen their roster as they seek to improve their competitive edge in the league. With capable players like Parayko in the fold, fans have reasons to be optimistic about the team’s future.
