Sabalenka Sounds Alarm on Tennis Grind: Is the Schedule Too Intense?

Aryna Sabalenka, currently the world’s top-ranked tennis player, has openly criticized the rigorous tournament schedule that players endure. Speaking at her media day press conference in anticipation of the Cincinnati Open, she expressed her concerns regarding the intensity of the schedule, stating, “The season has been really intense and it’s impossible to be at your best level every day, every week.”

The Belarusian athlete emphasized the need for players to manage their energy efficiently amid what she described as a “crazy” schedule. “Every week is a mandatory tournament and the intensity is overwhelming. It’s crazy what they are trying to make us do because we’re humans,” she stressed, highlighting the physical and mental toll it takes on players.

Reflecting on her own experience during the short break between Roland Garros and Wimbledon, Sabalenka admitted it felt increasingly challenging. After reaching the Wimbledon semifinals, she decided to take a hiatus to recharge, skipping the Canadian Open. During her time off, she enjoyed a vacation in Greece with her boyfriend, Georgios Frangulis, where she humorously noted her relaxed approach, only managing a light workout.

“Those amazing days were much needed,” Sabalenka remarked, indicating that the break allowed her to return refreshed. As she gears up for the Cincinnati Open, where she is the defending champion, her sights are also set on the upcoming US Open just one week later.

This self-care approach reflects a growing awareness within the sport about the need for player well-being amid a demanding schedule, and highlights the importance of mental and physical health for sustained performance.

As the tennis community continues to navigate the balance between competition and player well-being, Sabalenka’s candid acknowledgment of these challenges may inspire discussions on how to improve conditions for athletes, fostering a healthier future for the sport.
