Ruth Chepngetich, renowned for holding the women’s marathon world record, has received a three-year ban after admitting to a doping violation, as confirmed by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU). The AIU revealed that the Kenyan athlete acknowledged her breach of anti-doping rules involving the use of hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), a banned diuretic that can hide the presence of performance-enhancing substances.
Her suspension followed a positive test for HCTZ from a sample taken on March 14, with the AIU initially imposing a provisional suspension in July. Despite her recent accolades, including breaking the women’s marathon world record at the Chicago Marathon in 2022 with a remarkable time of 2 hours, 9 minutes, and 56 seconds, this ban raises concerns over the legacy of her athletic achievements. Importantly, the AIU has stated that all her records obtained prior to the positive test will remain intact.
The investigation uncovered that Chepngetich ingested unprescribed medication containing HCTZ. Initially unable to explain her positive test during an April interview, she later revised her account in July, explaining that she had used her housemaid’s medication after falling ill, without checking its ingredients. The AIU categorized this as “indirect intent,” leading to an extended ban period; however, due to her immediate acceptance of the proposed sanction, she received a one-year reduction.
Brett Clothier, Head of the AIU, underscored the importance of maintaining integrity in athletics, indicating that the organization will further investigate any suspicious materials retrieved from Chepngetich’s phone for additional potential violations. The case serves as a reminder that athletes are held accountable, a sentiment echoed by AIU chair David Howman, who reaffirmed that no one is exempt from the rules, bolstering the sport’s commitment to integrity.
