PISCATAWAY, N.J. – A single play can dramatically change the course of a football game and even a season. For Rutgers, linebacker Tyreem Powell delivered such a moment on Saturday, executing a crucial tackle that resulted in a late-game fumble and propelled the Scarlet Knights to a 26-19 victory over the formidable Minnesota team.

The pivotal moment came when Shaquan Loyal recovered the fumble with 8:28 left in the game, setting up Athan Kaliakmanis’ pivotal 4-yard touchdown pass to Ian Strong. This victory marked a turnaround for Rutgers (5-4, 2-4 Big Ten), ending a four-game losing streak and reigniting their hopes for bowl eligibility with three games remaining in the season.

Powell reflected on the significance of his tackle, stating, “It felt like it was needed at that time… I knew the momentum was back on our side and I knew the offense was going to get into the end zone.” His hit against Minnesota tight end Jameson Geers not only swung the momentum but was also aptly described as a “perfect moment” for the team.

Kaliakmanis, a transfer from Minnesota, showcased his skills with touchdown passes of 1 and 17 yards to Dymere Miller in the first half, before finding Strong for the lead. The Gophers (6-4, 4-3) had held a slight advantage, after scoring a third-quarter touchdown that put them ahead 16-14. However, the game took a turn following the turnover, which allowed Rutgers to regain control.

Minnesota’s quarterback, Max Brosmer, lamented the abrupt shift in momentum, summarizing the nature of the game: “One team is going to win and one is going to lose… We didn’t play our best so we lost.”

The Scarlet Knights displayed a strong defensive effort, with Jordan Walker adding a safety shortly after Powell’s critical tackle, enhancing their lead to 23-16. Jai Patel further solidified their position by making a 22-yard field goal, ultimately setting the stage for a two-score advantage.

Rutgers coach Greg Schiano praised his defense, noting their resilience despite a challenging season where they had allowed an average of 40 points in recent games. “That hit by Tyreem Powell… that was one of those sharp turns. That writes the story,” he remarked.

Kaliakmanis, who completed 17 of 33 passes for 240 yards, emphasized the unity of the team during their recent struggles, saying, “We did it out of love for each other, it wasn’t for anybody else.”

On the opposing side, Minnesota coach P.J. Fleck acknowledged the team’s shortcomings: “When you are in the Big Ten, you have to bring it every week. Sometimes it is just not your day.”

In an unfortunate turn for Rutgers, the team was missing defending conference rushing champion Kyle Monangai due to an undisclosed injury, leaving him just 69 yards shy of reaching a second consecutive 1,000-yard season.

Looking ahead, Minnesota will have a bye week before facing No. 6 Penn State, while Rutgers prepares to take on Maryland.

This victory could serve as a vital turning point for Rutgers, instilling confidence and fostering camaraderie as they approach the closing stages of their season. The energy from this win might just propel them to secure a bowl eligibility, leaving fans hopeful for a strong finish.
