All three high school football teams in Lincoln Parish have secured spots in the upcoming state championship playoffs, showcasing the talent and dedication of local athletes. Ruston High, Cedar Creek, and Lincoln Prep will each compete in their respective divisions as the postseason approaches.
The Ruston High Bearcats, with an impressive record of 8-2 and a district title clinched at 4-1 in District 2-5A, solidified their dominant position by defeating West Monroe last Friday. This victory not only earned them the top seed in the playoffs but also a first-round bye, allowing the Bearcats the advantage of hosting each playoff game leading up to the Superdome, should they advance that far. Head Coach Jerrod Baugh expressed the importance of the bye, emphasizing the time it allows for the team to heal and prepare for the next round. Ruston will face the winner of the matchup between No. 16 Westgate and No. 17 Airline.
Cedar Creek has also made strides this season, achieving a notable improvement with a record of 6-4 and a 4-2 standing in District 1-1A. The Cougars, who return to the Select School Division IV playoffs after a year off, will enter as the No. 19 seed. They are set to travel for their first playoff game against former district rival St. Frederick, who holds the No. 14 seed with a record of 5-5. Cedar Creek Head Coach Jacob Angevine expressed excitement about reaching the playoffs, which was a shared goal among the seniors who aimed to reignite enthusiasm for Cougar football.
Meanwhile, Lincoln Prep secured its place with a 51-28 win over Arcadia, finishing the season at 5-5 with a 4-3 district record. The Panthers have earned the No. 24 seed in the Non-Select School Division IV playoffs and will face the No. 9 seed St. Edmund, who boasts an 8-2 record and had a strong season marred only by two losses.
The optimism is palpable among players and coaches as they gear up for playoff action. With each team displaying resilience and determination, there is a shared hope within the Lincoln Parish community for a successful postseason run.
