At the recent 68th session of the United Nations Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS), Russia’s delegation led by Dmitry Bakanov discussed the country’s ambitious plans for its space sector. Bakanov emphasized two significant milestones being celebrated this year: the 50th anniversary of the “Apollo–Soyuz” program, a pioneering international space initiative, and the 70th anniversary of the Baikonur Cosmodrome, a historic site for space exploration.
International collaboration within the space domain is on the rise. Earlier this year, in May, Russia signed a memorandum with the China National Space Administration to work together on developing a lunar power station. This joint venture represents an exciting leap toward sustainable lunar exploration and technology development.
Scientific exploration is also focusing on Venus, where researchers are investigating its atmosphere for signs of past life. These studies aim to provide insights that could inform our understanding of Earth’s atmospheric changes in the context of climate change.
In addition, a memorandum was executed between the Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research of Djibouti and Roscosmos, hinting at potential cooperative projects. Bakanov noted that Djibouti is exploring the acquisition of satellite imagery of its territory and nearby nations, indicating a growing partnership with Russia.
Furthermore, an exhibition at the United Nations headquarters highlighted the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II. Supported by Russia and ten other nations, the resolution commemorates the sacrifices made during the conflict and features photographs from key battle sites and significant capitals, all taken from space.
This ongoing international collaboration in space demonstrates a shared commitment to exploration, research, and understanding, reflecting a hopeful trajectory for future scientific endeavors.
