George Russell from Mercedes clinched pole position on Saturday, March 7, during the Australian Grand Prix qualifying session at Albert Park in Melbourne. He outpaced his teammate Andrea Kimi Antonelli by 0.293 seconds and Isack Hadjar from Red Bull by 0.785 seconds, setting the stage for a competitive race.
Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc took the fourth spot on the grid, followed closely by McLaren drivers Oscar Piastri from Australia and reigning champion Lando Norris from the UK. Completing the top ten were seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, racing for Ferrari, along with the Racing Bulls duo of Liam Lawson from New Zealand and Arvid Lindblad from Britain, and Brazilian Gabriel Bortoleto driving for Audi.
One of the surprising turns in the session was a crash involving four-time world champion Max Verstappen from Red Bull. He lost control of his car during the first qualifying segment (Q1) and ended up in the gravel before crashing into a protective wall. As a result, Verstappen will start the race from the pit lane, adding an unexpected twist to his season debut.
