Royals Make Bold Move: Hunter Renfroe Designated for Assignment as Nick Loftin Gets Call-Up

The Kansas City Royals have officially designated outfielder Hunter Renfroe for assignment, making way for infielder Nick Loftin, who has been called up from Triple-A Omaha. Renfroe’s performance this season has faltered significantly, as he recorded a disappointing batting line of .182/.241/.242 over 35 games, without hitting a single home run, contributing a -1.5 WAR according to Baseball Reference.

Originally signed to a two-year, $13 million contract before the 2024 season, Renfroe was anticipated to add power to the Royals’ lineup, especially after having nine seasons with 20 or more home runs in his career. Despite coming off a season where he finished with 20 home runs, Renfroe’s struggles continued into 2024, where he managed only 15 home runs—the lowest in a full season throughout his career—while hitting .229/.297/.392. His current season shows troubling trends, with only six extra-base hits in 108 plate appearances, and his defensive skills have noticeably declined.

The Royals face a critical decision, as they have seven days to trade Renfroe or place him on waivers. Given his $7.5 million salary this year, it seems unlikely that another team would take on his contract. If Renfroe clears waivers, the Royals will retain financial responsibility for his remaining salary, minus the league minimum, if he is picked up by another team.

In contrast, Nick Loftin offers a potential upside. Previously a first-round pick, Loftin has seen time in the majors over the past two seasons, despite a modest .229/.307/.295 line in 75 games. However, he has excelled in Triple-A, boasting a .295/.451/.468 performance with four home runs in 40 games, alongside an impressive 39 walks, ranking him among the top in all minor leagues.

This move not only highlights the Royals’ strategy to revitalize their roster but also opens the door for young talent like Loftin to potentially shine in the big leagues. The organization is taking proactive steps, reflecting a commitment to reshaping the team’s dynamics and building a future competitive lineup.
