The Royal Exchange Theatre’s Artistic Director, Selina Cartmell, has announced a vibrant lineup for the theatre’s 50th anniversary season in 2026. Titled “A Homecoming,” the celebratory program features seven productions that aim to foster a closer connection between audiences and artists in the theatre’s unique in-the-round setting.

Cartmell’s ambitious roster includes two world premieres, two musicals, and three reimagined classics. The season will feature both returning theatrical alumni and new collaborators, highlighting the work of notable figures such as Sir Tom Courtenay, Jim Cartwright, Shobna Gulati, and David Threlfall, along with fresh faces like Johnny Vegas, Lucy Beaumont, and newcomer Tolu Okanlawon.

The festive season will commence with Jim Cartwright’s play “ROAD,” with a cast including Johnny Vegas, Lucy Beaumont, and Shobna Gulati. Sir Tom Courtenay will make his 17th appearance with the Royal Exchange through a special film performance. The play is scheduled to run from February 13th to March 14th.

Following “ROAD,” the theatre will present Noel Coward’s “Private Lives,” marking the 14th production of Coward’s work at the venue. This revival will be showcased from March 27th to May 2nd, 2026.

In May, the theatre will premiere the epic play “Even These Things,” written by Rory Mullarkey and directed by James Macdonald. This play explores Manchester and Ireland’s shared history, marking 30 years since the IRA bombing that impacted Manchester’s city center.

During the summer, audiences can experience the regional premiere of “Fun Home,” an award-winning musical based on Alison Bechdel’s graphic novel, with direction from Sarah Frankcom. This thought-provoking musical will be on stage from July 3rd to August 1st.

Returning to the Royal Exchange will be director Matthew Dunster and actor David Threlfall for a fresh interpretation of Shakespeare’s “King Lear,” scheduled for October. Later, Selina Cartmell herself will direct Stephen Sondheim’s acclaimed musical “A Little Night Music,” set to enchant audiences in December.

Kicking off 2027, the theatre will debut Tolu Okanlawon’s “Shooters,” a product of the 2025 Bruntwood Prize, with its world premiere in February.

For those eager to witness this remarkable season of theatre, additional details and ticket bookings are available on the Royal Exchange Theatre’s official website.
