Royal Charity in Turmoil: A Path Forward for Sentebale?

The Charity Commission of the U.K. has concluded its investigation into Sentebale, the organization co-founded by Prince Harry and Prince Seeiso of Lesotho, amid serious governance concerns. The Commission determined there was no evidence of widespread bullying, harassment, or any form of misconduct, clearing both Prince Harry and current chair Dr. Sophie Chandauka of overreach. However, the investigation highlighted significant internal disputes that affected the charity’s reputation and public trust.

Despite the findings, Prince Harry expressed that the damage caused by the internal conflicts is significant. He, alongside Prince Seeiso, indicated that they cannot see a path forward for their involvement in the charity while Chandauka remains in charge. The two founders are reportedly disheartened by what they characterize as a “hostile takeover” of the organization they established nearly two decades ago, which has provided crucial support to children in Lesotho and Botswana.

The Commission pointed out failures in governance within the charity, criticizing the way conflicts were allowed to unfold publicly. In response, Sentebale’s current board has committed to implementing the Commission’s recommendations to improve governance and safeguard the charity’s future. Chandauka acknowledged the Commission’s findings and emphasized the organization’s continued dedication to its mission despite recent challenges, expressing gratitude to the remaining board members and staff who remain committed to supporting the youth.

Former trustees of Sentebale expressed disappointment with the Commission’s conclusions, stating that important concerns regarding leadership were overlooked. They voiced worries about the charity’s future and the community’s wellbeing, urging for a governance review that they feel had not been properly executed.

The roots of the conflict have been partially attributed to governance issues rather than personal disputes. Chandauka’s relationship with Prince Harry reportedly soured after she declined a request to publicly defend his wife, Meghan Markle, against negative media portrayals.

As Prince Harry assesses his future options for charitable work in the region, he remains deeply committed to the welfare of the children benefiting from Sentebale’s mission. The potential for future collaborations with Prince Seeiso is also on the table, highlighting a continued dedication to their cause, which can instill hope for the communities they have long served.

Chandauka also maintains that Sentebale will emerge stronger from this situation, reaffirming its mission inspired by the founders’ legacy. This sentiment suggests that despite the turbulence, there is potential for renewal and progress within the charity post-crisis.
