Efforts to Revive Kava Farming on Rotuma Island
The Ministry of Agriculture is taking decisive action to revive kava farming on Rotuma Island by dedicating $280,000 this financial year to replanting endeavors. Rotuma faces a kava shortage due to overconsumption, insufficient replanting, and the adverse effects of the kava dieback disease. This initiative responds to the growing dependence on Viti Levu for kava, where increasing demand has driven prices up to $80 per kilogram.
Nimilote Waqabaca, the Agriculture Principal Officer, emphasizes that the replanting program is essential for revitalizing local kava farming and reducing the reliance on external sources. This initiative is not merely a short-term solution for the current shortage; it aims for long-term sustainability in kava production on Rotuma Island. Waqabaca envisions a return to the island’s previous kava farming prosperity and aims to inspire local farmers.
The program is consistent with nationwide efforts to combat the persistent kava dieback disease, a serious challenge for farmers across Fiji, including in regions like Nadua, Wainunu, and Bua. The cucumber mosaic virus (CMV) is linked to the disease, which has historically led to significant declines in kava production and market instability.
Previously, the Ministry of Agriculture has intensified strategies to address this issue, partnering with agricultural experts and providing educational workshops on sustainable farming practices. Their comprehensive approach, focusing on farmer education and support, is building resilience within the kava farming community.
The Rotuma initiative is expected to boost food security by reducing costs and keeping the economic benefits within the community. By prioritizing sustainable practices and reviving traditional methods, there is optimism for kava farming’s resurgence on the island. These combined efforts of local initiatives and research-backed strategies aim to ensure a sustainable and economically viable future for Fiji’s kava industry. The program offers hope for enhancing food security and improving local livelihoods, exemplifying a proactive approach to overcoming agricultural challenges.
