Rory McIlroy, the reigning Masters champion, will be absent from the opening playoff event of the PGA Tour season, the FedEx St. Jude Championship in Memphis, scheduled for next week. McIlroy’s name was not included in the field released last Friday.
Since his seventh-place tie at the Open Championship at Royal Portrush last month, McIlroy has taken a break from competitive play. He previously faced challenges at this tournament last year, finishing tied for second-to-last with a score of nine over par.
This upcoming tournament will see the return of world number one Scottie Scheffler, who recently triumphed at the Open by four shots. With the Wyndham Championship happening this week, the top 70 players in the FedEx Cup standings will qualify for the St. Jude Championship. Following this event, the top 50 will move on to the BMW Championship in Maryland, which is set for August 14-17.
Despite not participating in Memphis, McIlroy is looking ahead to upcoming tournaments, including the Irish Open at the K Club and the BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth in September. He is also preparing for the Ryder Cup in New York, where he will represent Europe.
This break might provide McIlroy with the opportunity to refresh and re-strategize, potentially enhancing his performance in the upcoming events. As McIlroy gears up for September’s tournaments, his fans will be eager to see his return to form and strong performance in the Ryder Cup.
