This week, he has embarked on his first-ever visit to India, where he is set to play at the Lodhi course at Delhi Golf Club for the DP World India Championship.
The Lodhi course, a prestigious golf venue located near the iconic Taj Mahal, presents a unique challenge for McIlroy and his fellow competitors. It has attracted a stellar lineup of golfers, including Carl Fleetwood, Viktor Hovland, Shane Lowry, and notable American players Ben Griffin and Brian Harman. Unlike the expansive courses many of these professionals are used to, Lodhi is relatively short at 6,912 yards, and its narrow fairways add to the difficulty. With average fairway widths of just 25 yards, players will find themselves navigating tight spaces, particularly on the 16th hole, which presents a challenging choke point only 14 yards wide.
Indian golfer Shubhankar Sharma, who has already won twice on the Asia Tour and placed 8th at the 2023 Open Championship, noted the intimidation factor of the course. “The fairways feel more like hallways,” he remarked, emphasizing the mental challenges posed by the layout. Sharma enjoys a home-field advantage, as he grew up playing at the Delhi Golf Club. Similarly, Anirban Lahiri, another Indian golfing champion who played his first junior event at the venue back in 1999, has had his own journey with the course. Lahiri’s early experiences were far from a success, as he described his initial rounds as “terrible.”
Through experience, Lahiri learned to respect the course, noting that overpowering it would not work. “I finally unlocked the course by identifying when to be aggressive and when to play conservatively,” he explained. He highlighted that many players, including McIlroy, might refrain from using their drivers, opting instead for more strategic club selections to navigate the demanding layout.
As McIlroy and his peers tackle this challenging course, they will rely on their skills and strategy, showcasing adaptability in the face of a golf venue that is both distinctive and testing.
