Rory McIlroy showcased an impressive performance during the first round of the 2026 Dubai Invitational, shooting a 5-under 66 to secure the lead. Utilizing the new TaylorMade P7CB irons and the unreleased 2026 TaylorMade TP5 golf ball, McIlroy delivered a strong start at Dubai Creek Resort in the United Arab Emirates.
The Northern Irish golfer birdied six of his first nine holes, posting a remarkable score of 31 on the back nine, before finishing even par for the second half of his round. This solid play gives him a one-shot advantage over golfers Connor Syme and David Puig, who managed an opening score of 67 despite arriving in Dubai just prior to the tournament.
McIlroy expressed satisfaction with his equipment change, stating that he made the switch from the TaylorMade RORS prototype irons after noticing performance discrepancies on the course. “I practiced with them at home since,” he mentioned, highlighting the benefits he found during his training in Australia.
Fellow competitor Shane Lowry, who finished with a score of 2-under 69, praised McIlroy’s game and underscored the impact his friend has on his own aspirations as a golfer. Lowry emphasized that having McIlroy as a close friend motivates him to elevate his own performance. “I’m very fortunate that Rory is a good friend, and to see what he’s achieved,” he said, reflecting on the influence of their friendship.
With a strong opening round, McIlroy appears poised for a promising tournament ahead, as he seeks to maintain his lead and continue his pursuit of excellence in the sport.
