SANTA CLARA — The San Francisco 49ers’ top draft picks for the 2025 NFL Draft, Mykel Williams and Alfred Collins, are still finding their footing as training camp progresses. Defensive coordinator Robert Saleh emphasizes the importance of growth for these rookies, prioritizing their development over immediate All-Pro-level performances.
“The expectation for these rookies is that they show great growth and get better every day,” Saleh stated. Despite initial struggles, the coaching staff believes both players are meeting this expectation in their early practices.
First-round pick Mykel Williams, selected 11th overall, is tasked with adapting to multiple positions on the defensive line. His versatility includes playing defensive end and moving inside for nickel situations. Saleh praised Williams for his impressive pass rush capabilities, stating, “It’s hard to see in there, but his pass rush on the inside’s been fantastic.” At 6-foot-5 and 267 pounds, Williams possesses remarkable athleticism and skills that make it challenging for opposing guards to match up against him.
“He’s got great feet. He’s not a traditional three technique. He’s showing off all of it,” Saleh commented, underscoring Williams’ capability to maneuver effectively against blockers with a combination of speed, strength, and agility. Saleh remains optimistic about Williams’ future, noting that while he still has room for improvement, his potential to become a difference-maker in the league is evident.
Second-round pick Alfred Collins, selected 43rd overall, offers a powerful presence at 6-foot-5 and 332 pounds. However, he started the training camp on the back foot after missing the offseason program due to a calf injury. Even though he has struggled with one-on-one pass-rush drills, Saleh highlights Collins’ progress in run defense. “Alfred’s been getting better every day, getting his legs underneath him, showing some really good progress in the run game,” observed Saleh, indicating that Collins is adapting to the demands of the NFL.
Training camp presents valuable learning experiences for both rookies, and with continuous effort and coaching, they have the potential to make significant impacts in the coming season. The 49ers are optimistic that over time, both Williams and Collins will develop into key players for the team.
