Roman Anthony, who has made a significant mark in the Red Sox’s minor league system, will take on a new role this Sunday as he makes his Major League Baseball (MLB) debut in the leadoff position. The Red Sox are set to face off against the defending champion Los Angeles Dodgers in a critical game as they aim to secure the series.
Red Sox manager Alex Cora explained that the decision to place Anthony at the top of the lineup stemmed from his success in that role during his minor league career. “Just felt right,” he stated, noting that Jarren Duran, who usually occupies the leadoff position, will be batting third for the first time this season. Cora expressed confidence in Duran’s recent performance, highlighting his productivity with men on base.
Anthony has shown promise since his promotion to the big leagues, maintaining a .265 batting average and a .382 on-base percentage over his first 39 games. Duran has also performed well, boasting a .292 average since the beginning of July, with three home runs and 16 RBIs during that time.
In addition to the lineup changes, Trevor Story will bat cleanup, while Masataka Yoshida takes on the designated hitter role. Ceddanne Rafaela starts at second base. On the pitching side, Walker Buehler, facing his former team, is slated to take the mound against the Dodgers’ Dustin May.
The game is scheduled for 1:35 PM at Fenway Park and will be broadcasted on NESN and various radio stations.
This change in lineup signifies a strategic shift for the Red Sox as they look to maximize their offensive potential. Anthony’s ascent to the leadoff position reflects the team’s commitment to leveraging their young talents effectively. This game presents an exciting opportunity for Anthony to make an impact in front of the home crowd and contribute to the Red Sox’s pursuit of victory against a strong opponent.
